The EN 222 is a national road integrated in the 'National Roads of Portugal' and that connects Vila Nova de Gaia and Almendra (Vila Nova de Foz Côa), practically coincident with the south side of the Douro river.

In 2015, the rental car company Avis, considered that the section of EN 222, between Varais / Lamego and Valença do Douro / Tabuaço, is the best road of the world for driving practice.

According to a mathematical formula, the ideal road has ten straight seconds for each second spent to curve. The EN 222 has a record of 11 seconds, being the closest to perfection among other world-wide roads, for which it was awarded the 'World Best Driving Road' award.
